Central Veterinary Research Unit

Introduction

The Diagnostic and Research is a unit under the Department of Veterinary Services, whose mandate is to conduct diagnoses, research, and production of animal vaccines. It comprises of a network of national, regional, provincial, and district diagnostic laboratories dotted across the country. The Central Veterinary Research Institute (CVRI) is the national reference laboratory that is supported by strategic satellite laboratories in Chipata, Choma, Isoka, Kasama, Mazabuka, Mongu, Ndola, Solwezi, and the Zambezi. CVRI is located in Chilanga district, 25km southwest of Lusaka, off Kafue road along Chanyanya road at farm No. 48A Balmoral

Objectives of CVRI

To provide the following services;

  • Laboratory diagnosis of animal diseases (with a focus on Diseases of National and Economic Importance (DNEIs) e.g., CBPP, FMD, Newcastle);
  • Laboratory surveillance and disease investigations
  • Production of animal vaccines and other biologicals
  • Applied research
  • Zoo-sanitary testing and certification
  • Biochemical analysis
  • Provision of in-service training, new technologies and refresher courses in laboratory diagnostics
  • Dissemination of scientific and technical information to the <b>Field Services

Functional units of CVRI

CVRI has eight functional units, whose main tasks are as follows:

  1. Animal Vaccine Production Unit

This Unit deals with the development and production of animal vaccines and other biologicals, namely: Rabies, Anthrax, Black quarter(BQ), Hemorrhagic Septicaemia(HS), Thermo-tolerant 1-2 Newcastle Disease vaccine and Bio-Soya inoculum for Soya beans farming

  1. Bacteriology and Mycology

This Unit deals with diagnostics and research of bacterial and mycological diseases affecting animals, e.g. CBPP, Brucellosis, and Anthrax

  1. Biochemicals and Toxicology

This Unit deals biochemical tests that include: Dip wash analysis, acaricide resistance, drug residues, poison detection and essential trace elements analysis

  1. Biotechnology

Deals with diagnostic and research of various diseases using molecular techniques. i.e.,PCR, qPCR, LAMP.

  1. Parasitology

Deals with diagnostics and research of protozoal and helminthological diseases of livestock such as Tick-borne diseases (ECF, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis), trypanosomiasis, cysticercosis/taeniasis.)

  1. Pathology and Epidemiology

This section is the clearinghouse for samples, i.e., reception, processing and distribution to all diagnostic sections. It also deals with: dispatch of samples to reference laboratories, zoo-sanitary testing, customer care, laboratory information management system, surveillance and investigation of disease, conducting post-mortems and histopathological diagnosis.

  1. Quality Control and Assurance

Ensures that all services offered by the functional units at CVRI are done in accordance with international requirements of ISO 17025. This guarantees quality and validity in all tests performed by each unit.

  1. Virology

Deals with diagnostics and research of viral diseases in animals such as Rabies, ASF, BVD, Newcastle, PPR, FMD, RVF.
