Fisheries Extension Unit

FISHERY CAMPS

There are 80 fishery camps and only 10 are manned by virtue of the areas being declared districts or turned into research stations

Location of camps

Capture Fisheries camps are dotted along the shorelines of both major and minor fishery areas which include:

  • Kafue Floodplain fishery
  • Zambezi Floodplains
  • Lukanga and Lusiwashi
  • Kariba
  • Itezhi-tezhi
  • Tanganyika
  • Mweru-Wantipa
  • Chambeshi River
  • Bangweulu
  • Mweru-Luapula
  • Luapula River

Duties

The main duties of the camp officers is to:

  • Collect fish market statistics
  • Mobilize fisher communities for co-management programs
  • Sensitize farmer communities towards fish farming
  • Training and dissemination of extension messages to fisher-folk and fish farmers
  • Implementation of fishing ban and other fisheries regulations
  • Fish handling and processing for reduced fish post-harvest losses
  • Offer aquaculture extension services: site selection, pond marking demarcating, pond construction, fish stocking, fish feeding, pond management, fish harvesting, market identification and linkages
