Mandate of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock

MFL is responsible for the development and management of fisheries and livestock subsector in Zambia and is the following are the specific responsibilities: policy and legal development, promotion of production and productivity, animal health, research and development, agribusiness and export, extension and advisory services, vocation, technical, and life learning skills development.

Functions

The Ministry’s portfolio functions as outlined in the Government Gazette Notice No. 1123 of 2021 are as follows;

  • Livestock and Fisheries Research and Specialist Services
  • Veterinary and Fisheries training
  • Fisheries and Livestock Extension
  • Livestock Identification and Traceability
  • Dairy Industry Development
  • Fisheries and Management Development
  • Livestock Development
  • Tsetse Control Services and Veterinary
  • Fisheries and Livestock Marketing Policy
  • Fisheries Policy
  • Livestock Policy
  • Field Services
  • Fisheries and Livestock Credit Development

The Ministry is also responsible for the following statutory Bodies and institutions:

  • Fisheries and Livestock Training Institutions
  • Dairy Industry Development Board
  • Veterinary Council of Zambia
  • Livestock Development Trust
  • Golden Valley Agriculture Research Trust – GART Batoka

 

Apart from the portfolio functions, the Ministry is mandated under the law to ensure implementation of the agriculture-related legislation.
